coachway

The coachway/park & ride facility forms part of the Phase 2 works at Handy Cross Hub. It is used for national and regional coach services, regional and local bus services, as well as park & ride for access to the town centre.

A car park for 400 cars is served by a concourse building which provides open and enclosed waiting areas, ticketing, café and WCs. The architecture is defined by an in situ concrete structure which forms a datum around which other elements are organised. The superstructure is characterised by rectilinear concrete piers prescribing elongated openings either side of a central service core. Secondary glazing elements are then inserted to form either sheltered platforms or the enclosed concourse. Circular columns support the kerbside roof edge and allow space to ‘flow’ around them. A photovoltaic array which provides power to the building making it carbon neutral in operation.
